What Are Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are used when patients suffer from cavities. When these cavities are removed by our dentists, dental fillings, composed of composite resin, are placed in the affected area to restore structure and the tooth’s integrity. These fillings keep the tooth from experiencing further decay and stops the spread of the cavity. These dental restorations include tooth colored composite filling materials in order to ensure the tooth always looks like a natural tooth. Our Houston dentists do not place mercury or silver fillings, except in rare occasions.
Amazing! I’ve already recommended them to a friend. They were very patient with my 5 year old who was terrified at first. She was able to get her cleaning and fillings done because they were so patient with her. The office staff was super helpful in explaining insurance questions and went above and beyond to help.
Composite fillings are used to restore teeth that have decayed, broken, or are misshapen, though not extensively enough to require a crown or extraction. When there is tooth decay, the dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth leaving a cavity. This cavity exposes the inner portions of the tooth and needs to be filled to protect the tooth from infections and prevent sensitivity. At our Heights/Garden Oaks dental office, we know that no one wants to have discomfort or pain in their teeth and removing cavities is a certain way to avoid these issues. Why Do I Need Dental Fillings?
When teeth are broken or suffering from tooth decay, it can be difficult to eat properly. Dental fillings restore function to chew food properly. These fillings also ensure that particles aren’t getting stuck inside the crevices created by deep cavities or broken teeth. A filling, however, may not be a viable option when the cavity is too large or close to the root. Our general dentist, or pediatric dentist for a child, will be able to use their years of experience and understanding of technology to decide the best treatment option.
What If My Teeth Don’t Hurt?
Sometimes cavities don’t hurt because there aren’t nerves on the tooth surface. If there is an active bacterial invasion of your tooth, the cavity will spread not only to other teeth, but it will go deeper inside the weaker part of your tooth to the nerve. When the cavity reaches this deep, then a dental filling may not be enough. This is when a dental crown or root canal treatment may be recommended.
