Root canal therapy treats tooth decay or damage that threatens or has destroyed the tooth’s vitality. The procedure removes the infection and nerve from inside the roots of the tooth and then fills the space to create a seal and keep out bacteria. The tooth is then restored with a dental crown or filling. Without treatment, the infection can spread from the tooth to the surrounding tissue and into the bloodstream causing pain and major medical emergencies.
If a root canal can save the tooth, the dentist or endodontist will provide localized anesthetic and sedation for comfort. Our dentists will make sure the area is fully numb. Our in-house dental anesthesiologist that specializes in sedations will ensure you are comfortable before the start of the procedure.
A small access hole is made in the tooth to remove infected bacteria and damaged tissue. Cleaning begins with the infected dental pulp above the nerve and below the tooth’s crown. Next, the procedure removes and cleans the infected nerve. After clearing out all debris and infected tissue, sterilizing the area, and sealing the tooth, the procedure is complete.
Typically, the dentist places a crown to protect the tooth from contaminants and infections. The dentist might prescribe medication before the final seal to ensure complete elimination of the infection. The root canal procedure will take approximately 45-90 minutes depending on the number of roots and the severity of the damage or decay. In the next visit, our dentist will seal the tooth and begin the process of restoring the tooth. The tooth usually requires a crown and may also need a dental buildup or post if severely compromised.
What an AMAZING team!! this was my first visit and I went in due to some pain and was told i needed a root canal. NOT COOL! but, the staff and the dentist were absolutely great.
