How to Get Rid of Dental Fear
Whether it was a previous distressing experience at the dentist or the sound of dental instruments—or even just the thought of entering a medical office—dental fear and anxiety can be triggering for many individuals. In addition to the overwhelming feelings of stress and anxiety, unattended dental and oral issues can have significant health consequences as well, such as tooth infections, gum disease, and tooth loss. Fortunately, there are effective strategies that can be used to calm the dental fears associated with dentophobia so that optimal oral and general health may be achieved.
Below, our dedicated team of dentists in The Woodlands share some of the most effective solutions for overcoming dental fear.
Sedation Dentistry
Sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” sedation dentistry can be extremely helpful for patients looking to find a calm state while at the dentist. Depending on the patient’s level of anxiety, the length or complexity of treatment being performed, and the patient’s medical history, there are several different options available for adults and pediatric patients, including:
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) – Nitrous oxide is generally used as a mild sedation technique to provide a relaxed, carefree feeling during treatment. A mask is gently placed over the nose so the patient may breathe in the nitrous oxide. Once the mask is removed, the sedation should wear off within a few minutes.
- Oral sedation – For deeper relaxation comparable to a feeling of drowsiness, oral conscious sedation can be given in the form of either a pill or liquid, while the patient remains awake under constant supervision. More time is needed for the effects to wear off, so it is important to have a loved one provide transportation to and from the appointment.
- Intravenous (IV) sedation – To help patients feel at ease, IV sedation is used to put patients into a state of light unconsciousness during the entire treatment. IV sedation is most commonly used for tooth extractions, root canals, dental implants, and other oral surgeries but may be considered for other reasons under the advice of a qualified sedation dentist.
- General anesthesia – General anesthesia is offered as another option for patients that may be undergoing more extensive dental surgery. It may also be indicated for younger or highly anxious patients.
Bring a Supportive Friend or Loved One
Having a familiar face and hand to hold during dental treatments can often provide significant emotional support to help patients of all ages through their appointment. By settling nerves and reducing the burden of stress, many patients may find this welcome distraction sufficient in easing their anxieties.
Choose a Great Dentist
When dental care is administered by an extensively trained and experienced dentist, many dental fears can be replaced by feelings of trust, comfort, and confidence. In researching potential dentists, it is best to keep in mind their education and certifications, any specialty training they may have (especially for surgical treatments), their demeanor and responses to patient questions, the safety and treatment protocols in place, and the overall atmosphere of the office—from the comfort of the treatment rooms to the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and team.
